4 Essential Skills for Copywriters

2025 is right around the corner. And guess what?

I don’t want to see any copywriter begging for a job.

Why? There’s a need for each and every single one of you. And you don’t need to beg for an opportunity from some copywriting agency.

Instead, you need to spend some time developing 4 essential skills that can help bring those opportunities to you.

Here are 4 skills that can make any copywriter invaluable to their clients.

Research Skills

As a copywriter, you’re more than just a writer. There are many skills that you’re going to have to add to your expertise.

And one of those skills involves researching different data.

What type of data will you have to learn how to search for?

  • The buying preferences of your audience.
  • The different topics that your audience are interested in.
  • Client testimonials.
  • The latest trends in your industry.
  • How your audience responds to your content.

One of the strongest things you can do as a copywriter is learn as much about your audience as possible. The more research you conduct on your audience, the better you can address their pain points.

How to Develop Research Skills

Whether you’re new or experienced in copywriting, there are several ways that you can improve your research skills.

The first step is to begin with your target audience. If you haven’t defined your target audience, do that. Learn as much as you can about their issues, their desires, and their preferred method of communication.

Next, research the products or services that can help solve your audience’s problems. What is the unique selling proposition? What can that product or service provide your target audience that their competitors can’t?

Next, hit the streets. Pay attention to the channels that your target audience would voice their opinions. Research any feedback that your audience gives, including testimonials and surveys.

These steps are a great start to flexing your research skills. Another skill that you also want to flex is your communication skills.

Communication Skills

You may think of yourself as David and a copywriting agency as Goliath. But do you know why so many people hesitate to work with copywriting agencies?

Because just like any other organization, they juggle so many clients.

It’s hard to provide a personalized experience to hundreds of people. More importantly, it’s hard to adjust to changes in deadlines.

That’s the advantage that you have as a copywriter. You get to provide that one-one-one experience to your client and meet them where they’re at.

Whether they need you to complete a project earlier or later than expected, you’re able to accommodate them. But to do that, your communication skills must be on point.

Improving Your Communication Skills

Just like your research skills, it starts with your audience. Think about the different types of channels that you can use to reach your clients.

Don’t be afraid to ask them which channels they prefer. And most importantly, be flexible.

Things happen. You may not be able to complete a project by a specific deadline. That’s fine.

What’s not fine is keeping your client in the dark. Be transparent with your client and let them know about any changes.

Which leads into the next skill you must develop – time management.

Time Management Skills

Your most important asset is time. You don’t want to waste yours, and you definitely don’t want to waste your clients’ time.

However, things happen. Remember, there are several tasks that you’ll be juggling at the same time, including:

  • Drafting copy.
  • Conducting keyword research.
  • Creating graphics for content.
  • Editing content for SEO optimization.
  • Writing posts for social media.

One of the worst things you can do is rush your work. You don’t want to sacrifice quality to meet deadlines.

You want to provide high quality content for each of your clients. That’s why your time management skills must be on point.

How to Improve Your Time Management Skills

Getting better at time management starts with simple steps. The first step is to make a list of your priorities. What tasks must be completed by a specific date? How long will it take to complete that task?

The next step is to create a system that works for you. That system could include simple things like:

  • A to-do list.
  • Time blocking.
  • Taking short breaks in between tasks.
  • Delegating tasks to other copywriters.

The final step is to manage distractions. Again, things happen. But to be as productive as possible, we have to eliminate as many distractions as possible.

Let’s say that you block out 3 hours to work on a copywriting project. During that time, you focus specifically on the tasks at hand. You silence your notifications on all of your devices.

Work in a designated area that helps you become as productive as possible. You schedule little breaks in between tasks to give yourself a rest.

These are little tasks that you can do to help you maximize your time.

Last but not least, the last skill you have to develop are your relationship skills.

Relationship Skills

Relationships are key for freelancers.

Just like in every other industry, networking is important. You must be able to build relationships and form a community.

This doesn’t just apply to your former and current clients. It would also benefit you to build relationships with other freelancers.

Copywriting can be lonely. Building that connection with people who know where you’re coming from is priceless.

Another priceless benefit is being able to provide business opportunities amongst each other. There are so many copywriting projects available.

When one copywriter can’t complete a project, they can recommend you for that project – and vice versa.

How to Improve Your Relationship Skills

To build great relationships with other freelancers, start with transparency. Remember that you are talking to another human being – not just someone who can bring in more money with you.

Focus on finding some common ground. Yes, you both are copywriters. But I’m sure you have other interests and hobbies outside of writing.

Next, be intentional when it comes to building a relationship. You can send an email or text just offering some encouraging words.

Another great tip is to choose the best platform to communicate with other copywriters. And with this tip, there’s no right or wrong answer.

If you want to communicate with other copywriters through social media, that’s great. If you want to create a personal chat with other freelancers, that’s great as well.

Final Thoughts

Research skills, communication skills, time management skills, and relationship skills can help you not only compete with copywriting agencies.
